Located in close proximity to McNeese State University in Lake Charles, Louisiana, Dolby Elementary School serves students from pre- kindergarten through fifth grade. The professional staff includes twenty-five classroom teachers, a library media specialist, a physical education teacher, a music teacher, an art teacher, two special education teachers and five paraprofessionals, a French teacher, a speech therapist, and  a counselor. With its six teachers of gifted education, Dolby serves as an Academically Gifted Resource Center. The student population at Dolby is approximately 545 students. The gifted program serves another 250 students. The Louisiana Department of Education  named Dolby as a “School of Academic Achievement” in 1999 and again in 2001. At that time Dolby received monetary recognition as a school of "Recognized Growth." Since then the school has continued to ear rewards, once for "Recognized Academic Growth" again and twice for "Exemplary Academic Growth." In October 2002, Dolby received the SWLA Quality Award from the Chamber Southwest.  In December of 2002 Dolby Elementary became the first K-12 school to receive the Performance Excellence Award from the Louisiana Quality Foundation. School wide efforts such as implementation of the Baldrige-based quality in education framework, the Accelerated Reader Program, student-centered processes, technology integration, and a strong emphasis on standards-based teaching and learning are ensuring that Dolby students are well-prepared to enter middle school.
